Caring for Your Natural Hair in the Winter

Growing up in the Midwest, I know winter can be rough with low temperatures and windy days. Just this year, we experienced temperatures in the high negative digits, read -50 and below. While many of us think of our skin when the weather drops, we sometimes forget about our mane. Our hair needs just as much care during the winter as it does during other seasons of the year.

Five Tips for Caring for Your Natural Hair in the Winter

  1. DRINK plenty of water. Water keeps you hydrated. Hydration is good for all parts of your body including your scalp. During the winter, you are more likely to experience dryness so stay hydrated.

  2. CLEAN your scalp. It might seem smart to wash your hair less often during the winter, but a clean scalp equals HEALTHY hair. Reach out to your hair stylist about a cleaning regimen that works best for your hair type when a salon visit isn’t scheduled.

  3. DEEP condition your hair more often. Deep conditioning will provide your hair with moisture which will reduce breakage.

  4. MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE. Keep your hair good and moisturized. Dry hair can be a problem throughout the year, but even more in the winter due to the harsher weather conditions. Taking time to moisturize your hair will help it retain moisture which also makes your hair softer and easier to manage.

  5. TUCK (protective styling) in those strands so your natural does NOT become extremely dry, tangled, or knotty.
